Matt Curtis has been using creativity for ministry since 2002. After two years promoting missions and 16 years on church staff—in roles ranging from graphic designer to Creative Minister—Matt shifted from serving one church to equipping many.

In 2022, Matt launched Lunchtime Heroes to help churches effectively leverage creativity for ministry. Through branding, design, coaching, and consulting, Lunchtime Heroes has partnered with churches to build healthy and effective creative ministries across the country.

Outside of ministry work, Matt enjoys content creation, BBQ, roasting (and drinking) coffee, and gaming with friends.

What is a lunchtime hero?

A Lunchtime Hero is someone that takes their lunch! Well, it's a bit more than that.

In 2012, a study was done to determine if eating lunch at your desk was more productive than taking a lunch. On the surface, it seems pretty clear: working over lunch means you get an extra hour in your day, right?

Surprisingly, the study found that those who took their lunch were actually better off for a multiple reasons–productivity included!

In my time serving in creative ministry, I faced plenty of seasons where I didn't feel like I have time to take a lunch. And if you skip lunch once, you'll find that it becomes a lot easier to keep skipping. Over time, regularly skipping your lunch sets you on a trajectory to burn out.

Of course missing lunch every once in a while won't burn you out. But we're talking about the prolonged habit.

Now I use lunch as an indicator. If I feel the need to work through lunch just to survive, it means something else is broken. Maybe my systems aren't holding up like they need to, I'm not delegating effectively, or projects aren't being submitted with enough lead time.

A Lunchtime Hero is someone who has worked hard to build the foundation they need to keep their creative ministry (and themselves) healthy.
